Overview
Red coral (Corallium rubrum) is an organic gemstone formed by marine organisms called coral polyps. Unlike mineral gemstones that crystallize from inorganic processes, coral is the calcified skeletal structure of tiny sea animals. It has been used as a gemstone and talisman for thousands of years, particularly in Mediterranean and Indian cultures.
Physical Properties
Mohs hardness: 3 to 4. Refractive index: 1.486 to 1.658. Specific gravity: 2.60 to 2.70. Composition: primarily calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) in the form of calcite, coloured by carotenoid pigments. Coral is one of the softest gem materials in common use, requiring careful handling. It is opaque to translucent and takes a good polish.
Colour and Quality
The most valued colour for Jyotish use is a vivid, undyed red to orange-red, often called "ox-blood red." The surface should be smooth, evenly coloured, free of pits, white spots, or cracks. Uniformity of colour across the cabochon or bead is important. Dyed coral is common in the market and must be identified through testing.
Major Sources
The Mediterranean Sea (Italy, particularly Torre del Greco near Naples, has been the center of coral trading for centuries). Japan and Taiwan produce fine deep-sea coral in red, pink, and white varieties. The Indian Ocean also yields coral, though quality varies.
Vedic Significance
Red coral (Moonga) represents Mars (Mangal) in Vedic astrology. It is prescribed for physical vitality, courage, property matters, siblings, and overcoming fear and lethargy. The stone should be natural, undyed, set in gold or copper, and worn on the ring finger of the right hand on a Tuesday.
Sustainability Concerns
Coral harvesting is regulated in most jurisdictions due to concerns about marine ecosystem health. CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) lists certain coral species. Buyers should ensure that any coral purchase complies with applicable regulations and comes from sustainable sources.
