Why Gemstone Origin Matters More Than You Think

Why Gemstone Origin Matters More Than You Think

A 3-carat ruby of fine colour sits on a dealer's desk. If it came from Mozambique, it might sell for $8,000 per carat. If that same stone, somehow identical in appearance, came from Burma's Mogok Valley, it could sell for $30,000 to $50,000 per carat. The stone is the same. The origin changes the price by a factor of four to six.

How Origin Affects Quality

Geographic origin matters for a practical reason: the geological conditions in each mining region produce stones with characteristic optical properties. Kashmir sapphires have a velvety appearance caused by microscopic inclusions that scatter light. This "Kashmir haziness" cannot be replicated by heating or treating sapphires from other origins. Burmese rubies owe their intense colour partly to low iron content, which allows strong fluorescence that makes the red appear to glow from within. Mozambican rubies often contain more iron, reducing fluorescence and producing a slightly darker, less luminous red.

How Origin Affects Price

Beyond physical differences, origin carries market perception and historical premium. Kashmir sapphires from a mine that has been essentially dormant for over a century command prices driven by scarcity and legend. Colombian emeralds benefit from centuries of reputation and a specific colour profile (warm, slightly yellowish green) that differs from Zambian emeralds (cooler, slightly bluish green). Both are fine stones, but market tradition favours the Colombian origin.

How Labs Determine Origin

Origin determination uses a combination of inclusion study (each deposit produces characteristic inclusion assemblages), trace element chemistry (measured by LA-ICP-MS or EDXRF, showing ratios of iron, chromium, vanadium, gallium, and other elements), UV-Vis spectroscopy (absorption patterns linked to specific chemical environments), and comparison with reference samples from documented mining locations.

No single test determines origin. Gemological labs maintain databases of reference stones from every major deposit and compare test results statistically. Origin is stated only when the evidence points conclusively to a single region. When the evidence is ambiguous, reputable labs will note "origin undetermined" rather than guess.

At GTCL, origin determination is available upon request for rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. The origin statement appears on the certificate when the evidence supports a conclusion.
